Trade Schools Online

Gauley Bridge WV student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Gauley Bridge WV students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online education, for example learning safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will blend online instruction with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to acquire a new profession.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Gauley Bridge WV trade schoolsOnce you have selected the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Gauley Bridge WV area and all over the United States to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of relevant qualifications when making school comparisons. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the initial two variables you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Gauley Bridge WV area technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Make certain that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive an excellent education, it may assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Gauley Bridge WV is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might signify that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It might also indicate that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Gauley Bridge WV area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many trade programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Gauley Bridge WV area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Gauley Bridge WV company if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Gauley Bridge WV, check that the schools you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
