Online Vocational Schools

Friendly WV student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Friendly WV students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be appropriate for online classes, for example learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will incorporate online education with on campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to determine before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new trade.

They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may signify that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It may also signify that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Friendly WV area.

Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Friendly WV contracting company if they can provide some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Friendly WV, confirm that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
