Online Trade Schools

Fairview WV student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Fairview WV students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online classes, for instance studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will incorporate online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Concerns to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Fairview WV trade schoolsWhen you have decided on the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you want to obtain, either on campus or online, you can begin to decrease your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Fairview WV area and across the Country to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of relevant qualifications when making school assessments. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Fairview WV area technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire a superior education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, some states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Fairview WV is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate might suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It might also mean that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Fairview WV area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Fairview WV area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Fairview WV contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Fairview WV, confirm that the schools you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
