Vocational Schools Online

Keyport WA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Keyport WA students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be suitable for online training, for example studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and delivers comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate may indicate that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It could also suggest that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates secure apprenticeships or employment in the Keyport WA area.

Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Keyport WA area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Keyport WA contractor if they can provide some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Washington and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Keyport WA, check that the schools you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment.
