Online Vocational Schools

Hampden Sydney VA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Hampden Sydney VA students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online training, such as studying safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

Questions to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Hampden Sydney VA trade schoolsOnce you have decided on the trade and type of certificate or degree that you desire to acquire, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Hampden Sydney VA area and all over the USA to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school comparisons. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first two factors you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Hampden Sydney VA area vocational schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you acquire an excellent education, it may assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help determine the quality of a trade school near Hampden Sydney VA is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It may also suggest that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Hampden Sydney VA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Hampden Sydney VA area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Hampden Sydney VA contractor if they can give you some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Virginia and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Hampden Sydney VA, verify that the schools you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
