Trade Schools Online

Edwardsville VA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Edwardsville VA students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online education, for instance learning driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will blend online education with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and provides in-depth hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to learn a new trade.

What to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Edwardsville VA trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you wish to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Edwardsville VA area and across the United States to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school assessments. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first two aspects you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Edwardsville VA area trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain an excellent education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Edwardsville VA is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It might also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Edwardsville VA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Edwardsville VA area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Edwardsville VA company if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with several of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Virginia and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Edwardsville VA, check that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
