Not only do you need to make sure that you will get the extensive training required to be successful in your new field, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Many students make the mistake of selecting a vocational school just because the campus is closest to their residence or where the work. Or they might be attracted to the one that charges the lowest tuition. Of course the cost and location of the training are important factors when assessing trade school options, but they should not be the sole ones. Additional variables including reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions you should be asking so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will review a few of those questions shortly in this post. But to start with, let’s talk about some of the trade options that are offered as well as the accessibility of online programs.

Online Trade Schools

Cartersville VA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Cartersville VA students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online classes, for example learning safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will incorporate online education with on campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

Concerns to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Cartersville VA trade schoolsWhen you have picked the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you wish to earn, either on campus or online, you can begin to decrease your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Cartersville VA area and all over the Country to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school comparisons. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first two factors you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Cartersville VA area vocational programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Verify that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive a superior education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help measure the quality of a trade school near Cartersville VA is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate might suggest that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It might also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Cartersville VA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Cartersville VA area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Cartersville VA contractor if they can provide some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Virginia and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Cartersville VA, confirm that the programs you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
