Learning a Trade Online

Whiterocks UT student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Whiterocks UT students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be appropriate for online learning, such as studying driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will incorporate online education with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to determine before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers in-depth practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to learn a new profession.

Questions to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Whiterocks UT trade schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you want to earn, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Whiterocks UT area and all over the USA to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of relevant qualifications when making school evaluations. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first two variables you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Whiterocks UT area technical programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you get a superior education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Whiterocks UT is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It could also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Whiterocks UT area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Whiterocks UT area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Whiterocks UT contractor if they can give you some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to a few of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Utah and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Whiterocks UT, check that the programs you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
