Learning a Vocation Online

Murray UT student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Murray UT students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online training, for instance learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will incorporate online education with on campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and delivers in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for those with time constraints to learn a new profession.

Concerns to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Murray UT trade schoolsWhen you have picked the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, either on campus or online, you can begin to decrease your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Murray UT area and all over the Country to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of important qualifiers when making school assessments. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first two factors you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Murray UT area technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you obtain a quality education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Murray UT is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or employment in the Murray UT area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Murray UT area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Murray UT company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Utah and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Murray UT, verify that the programs you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.

    Murray, Utah

Murray (/ˈmʌri/) is a city situated on the Wasatch Front in the core of Salt Lake Valley in the U.S. state of Utah. Named for territorial governor Eli Murray, it is the state's fourteenth largest city. According to the 2010 census, Murray has approximately 46,746 residents.[4] Murray shares borders with Taylorsville, Holladay, South Salt Lake and West Jordan, Utah. Once teeming with heavy industry, Murray's industrial sector now has little trace and has been replaced by major mercantile sectors. Known for its central location in Salt Lake County, Murray has been called the Hub of Salt Lake County. Unlike most of its neighboring communities, Murray operates its own police, fire, power, water, library, and parks and recreation departments and has its own school district.[5] While maintaining many of its own services, Murray has one of the lowest city tax rates in the state.[6]

Thousands of people each year visit Murray City Park for organized sports and its wooded areas. Murray is home to the Intermountain Medical Center, a medical campus that is also Murray's largest employer. Murray has been designated a Tree City USA since 1977.[5]

Before being permanently settled by Mormon pioneers in 1848, the area where Murray is located was a natural area that served as the seasonal home of Paiute, Shoshone, and Bannock Native American tribes. The tribes camped along local creek banks and stream beds during their migrations. Artifacts of Native American encampments have been located along the Jordan River, including camps near Willow Pond Park.[7]
