Trade Schools Online

Whitwell TN student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Whitwell TN students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online classes, for instance learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online education with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers comprehensive practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new profession.

Points to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Whitwell TN trade schoolsAfter you have decided on the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Whitwell TN area and across the United States to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the initial 2 aspects you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Whitwell TN area vocational programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire an excellent education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, some states require that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Whitwell TN is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It might also signify that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Whitwell TN area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of technical programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Whitwell TN area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Whitwell TN contracting company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Tennessee and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Whitwell TN, verify that the programs you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

    Whitwell, Tennessee

Whitwell is a city in Marion County, Tennessee, United States, approximately 24 miles northwest of Chattanooga. The population was 1,699 at the 2010 census.[4] It is part of the Chattanooga, TN–GA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The town that became Whitwell was originally known as Cheekville, but renamed "Whitwell" for Thomas Whitwell, a British metallurgist, inventor and co-founder of the Southern States Coal, Iron and Land Company, who was killed in an accident in his own ironworks in Thornaby in 1878[6][7][8][9]. Whitwell was incorporated as a city in 1956, having grown as a mining town due to the abundance of coal in the mountains near the town. In 1981 there was a major mining accident when 13 coal miners were killed in an explosion. A full list of the names of those killed in the mine explosion is on a monument at Whitwell High School. Whitwell also has an annual Labor Day celebration that has been celebrated for over 50 consecutive years.[10]

Whitwell is located at 35°11′51″N 85°31′9″W / 35.19750°N 85.51917°W / 35.19750; -85.51917 (35.197570, -85.519082).[11] It is situated in the southwestern Sequatchie Valley at the base of a relatively steep escarpment of the Cumberland Plateau. The Sequatchie River passes just east of the city, and forms a portion of its southeastern boundary.
