Perhaps you have already chosen one that you have for years desired to pursue. For example, perhaps you have always had fun working on your car and have considered utilizing that ability to earn a living as an automotive tech. Or maybe a relative has had a prosperous career in a particular vocation or trade and you would like to follow in his or her footsteps. Learning a Trade Online

Orient SD student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Orient SD students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be suitable for online learning, for instance learning safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to determine before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and delivers in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for those with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Orient SD trade schoolsOnce you have selected the trade and type of degree or certificate that you desire to earn, either on campus or online, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Orient SD area and across the USA to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of important qualifiers when making school comparisons. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first two variables you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Orient SD area vocational programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you receive a superior education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a trade school near Orient SD is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also signify that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Orient SD area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Orient SD area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Orient SD contractor if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in South Dakota and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Orient SD, confirm that the programs you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
