Trade Schools Online

Westover PA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Westover PA students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online learning, for instance studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online education with on-campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to ask before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Points to Ask Vocational Schools

Accreditation.  Many Westover PA area trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you get a quality education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, some states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It might also suggest that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Westover PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Westover PA area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Westover PA company if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Westover PA, check that the schools you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
