However with so many vocational schools to select from, just how do you approach locating the best one? Not only do you have to confirm that you will receive the comprehensive training needed to be successful in your new profession, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Or they may gravitate to the one that charges the lowest tuition. Of course the location and cost of the programs are critical factors when analyzing vocational school options, but they must not be the sole ones. Added considerations including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important also. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will address several of those questions shortly in this article. But to start with, let’s talk about a few of the vocation options that are available as well as the availability of online schools.

Learning a Vocation Online

Valencia PA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Valencia PA students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online education, for instance learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and provides comprehensive practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for those with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

Questions to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Valencia PA trade schoolsWhen you have selected the trade and type of degree or certificate that you want to obtain, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Valencia PA area and across the United States to select from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school comparisons. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the initial 2 factors you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Valencia PA area vocational programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you get a superior education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near Valencia PA is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It may also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Valencia PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous technical programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Valencia PA area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Valencia PA contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Valencia PA, verify that the schools you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
