Vocational Schools Online

Saint Marys PA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Saint Marys PA students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online learning, for example learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online education with on-campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

Concerns to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Saint Marys PA trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to acquire, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many technical schools in the  Saint Marys PA area and across the USA to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school assessments. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first two aspects you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Saint Marys PA area technical schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you obtain a superior education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states require that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Saint Marys PA is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate might suggest that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It could also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or employment in the Saint Marys PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Saint Marys PA area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Saint Marys PA contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Saint Marys PA, check that the programs you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
