Learning a Vocation Online

Parryville PA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Parryville PA students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online learning, such as learning driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online instruction with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to find out before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

What to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Parryville PA trade schoolsWhen you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you wish to earn, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Parryville PA area and throughout the USA to choose from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the initial 2 factors you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Parryville PA area trade schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you obtain a quality education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Also, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Parryville PA is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It might also mean that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Parryville PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Parryville PA area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Parryville PA company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Parryville PA, confirm that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
