Vocational Schools Online

Northumberland PA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Northumberland PA students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online learning, such as studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will blend online education with on-campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new profession.

Concerns to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Northumberland PA trade schoolsWhen you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to attain, either on campus or online, you can begin to decrease your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many trade schools in the  Northumberland PA area and across the USA to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first two variables you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Northumberland PA area trade schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it can help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help determine the quality of a trade school near Northumberland PA is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also indicate that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Northumberland PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Northumberland PA area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Northumberland PA company if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with a few of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Northumberland PA, confirm that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.

Northumberland was founded in 1772.[3] The land that became Northumberland was purchased from the Iroquois in the first Treaty of Fort Stanwix in 1768, and the village was laid out in 1772. During the American Revolution, Northumberland was evacuated during the Big Runaway in 1778, and only finally resettled in 1784.[4]

Northumberland was the American home of eighteenth-century British theologian, Dissenting clergyman, natural philosopher, educator, and political theorist Joseph Priestley (1733–1804) from 1794 until his death in 1804. The Joseph Priestley House still stands on Priestley Avenue and is a National Historic Landmark on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and a museum administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. There is one other property in the borough on the NRHP: the Priestley-Forsyth Memorial Library, built by a great grandson of Joseph Priestley. Much of the borough is part of the Northumberland Historic District, which is also on the NRHP.

Northumberland is located at 40°53′38″N 76°47′46″W / 40.89389°N 76.79611°W / 40.89389; -76.79611 (40.893935, -76.795975),[5] about 60 miles northeast of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. It sits at the confluence of the north and west branches of the Susquehanna River.
