Learning a Trade Online

New Alexandria PA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with New Alexandria PA students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online education, for example studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online instruction with on-campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and provides in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to learn a new profession.

Questions to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask New Alexandria PA trade schoolsWhen you have decided on the trade and type of degree or certificate that you desire to earn, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many technical schools in the  New Alexandria PA area and throughout the USA to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of important qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial 2 factors you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous New Alexandria PA area vocational schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Make certain that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get an excellent education, it may assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, some states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near New Alexandria PA is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It might also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or jobs in the New Alexandria PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with New Alexandria PA area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local New Alexandria PA contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near New Alexandria PA, confirm that the programs you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
