Vocational Schools Online

Fairchance PA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Fairchance PA students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online education, for example learning safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and provides in-depth hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

Things to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Fairchance PA trade schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you wish to earn, either on campus or online, you can begin to narrow down your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Fairchance PA area and throughout the Country to choose from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school assessments. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the initial 2 factors you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Fairchance PA area trade programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you obtain a superior education, it may assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Fairchance PA is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate might suggest that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It may also signify that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Fairchance PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many trade programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Fairchance PA area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Fairchance PA contracting company if they can give you some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with several of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Fairchance PA, verify that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
