Online Trade Schools

Durham PA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Durham PA students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online classes, such as studying driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will combine online education with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to find out before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers comprehensive practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to acquire a new profession.

Points to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Durham PA trade schoolsAs soon as you have picked the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to attain, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Durham PA area and throughout the United States to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school comparisons. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first 2 variables you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Durham PA area trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make certain that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you receive a quality education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Durham PA is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It could also suggest that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Durham PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous training programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Durham PA area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Durham PA company if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Durham PA, check that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
