Trade Schools Online

Catawissa PA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Catawissa PA students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be appropriate for online learning, for example studying driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will blend online education with on campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to ask before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

Questions to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Catawissa PA trade schoolsAfter you have chosen the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you wish to acquire, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Catawissa PA area and all over the United States to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of key qualifications when making school comparisons. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial two factors you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Catawissa PA area technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you acquire a quality education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Catawissa PA is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might indicate that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It could also signify that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Catawissa PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Catawissa PA area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Catawissa PA contracting company if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Catawissa PA, confirm that the schools you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
