Learning a Vocation Online

Bridgeport PA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Bridgeport PA students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online classes, for example learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online studying and provides in-depth practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Questions to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Bridgeport PA trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the trade and type of degree or certificate that you wish to earn, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many trade schools in the  Bridgeport PA area and throughout the United States to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of key qualifiers when making school assessments. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial two variables you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Bridgeport PA area trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Make certain that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get a quality education, it may help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, some states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Bridgeport PA is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It may also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Bridgeport PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Bridgeport PA area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Bridgeport PA contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Bridgeport PA, check that the programs you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.
