new skills training sign Enid OKDeciding to enter into a new occupation and enroll in a vocational school near Enid OK are important decisions that will greatly affect your future career. However with so many vocational schools to select from, exactly how do you approach finding the best one? Not only do you need to make sure that you will get the complete training needed to be successful in your new occupation, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Some prospective students make the mistake of enrolling in a vocational school just because the campus is closest to their residence or where the work. Or they might be attracted to the one that has the lowest tuition. Naturally the location and cost of the training are important considerations when assessing trade school options, but they must not be the only ones. Added considerations such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions you should be asking so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will review some of those questions later in this article. But to start with, let’s look at some of the vocation options that are offered including the accessibility of online programs.

Learning a Trade Online

Enid OK student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Enid OK students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online education, such as studying safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will incorporate online education with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to ask before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and provides comprehensive practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new profession.

Things to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Enid OK trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Enid OK area and all over the Country to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of relevant qualifications when making school assessments. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Enid OK area technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain an excellent education, it may assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near Enid OK is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It might also suggest that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Enid OK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Enid OK area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Enid OK contracting company if they can provide some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to some of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Oklahoma and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Enid OK, confirm that the programs you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

    Enid, Oklahoma

Enid (ē'nĭd) is a city in Garfield County, Oklahoma, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 49,379, making it the ninth-largest city in Oklahoma. It is the county seat of Garfield County.[7] Enid was founded during the opening of the Cherokee Outlet in the Land Run of 1893, and is named after Enid, a character in Alfred, Lord Tennyson's Idylls of the King. In 1991, the Oklahoma state legislature designated Enid the "purple martin capital of Oklahoma."[8] Enid holds the nickname of "Queen Wheat City" and "Wheat Capital" of Oklahoma and the United States for its immense grain storage capacity, and has the third-largest grain storage capacity in the world.[1]

In summer 1889, M.A. Low, a Rock Island official, visited the local railroad station then under construction, and inquired about its name. At that time, it was called Skeleton. Disliking the original name, he renamed the station Enid after a character in Alfred Lord Tennyson's Idylls of the King.[9] However, a more fanciful story of how the town received its name is popular. According to that tale, in the days following the land run, some enterprising settlers decided to set up a chuckwagon and cook for their fellow pioneers, hanging a sign that read "DINE". Some other, more free-spirited settlers, turned that sign backward to read, of course, "ENID". The name stuck.

During the opening of the Cherokee Outlet in the Land Run of 1893, Enid was the location of a land office which is now preserved in its Humphrey Heritage Village, part of the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center. Enid, the rail station, (now North Enid, Oklahoma) was the original town site endorsed by the government.[10] It was platted by the surveyor W. D. Twichell, then of Amarillo, Texas.[11]
