Learning a Trade Online

Arcadia OK student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Arcadia OK students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online education, for instance studying safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

Concerns to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Arcadia OK trade schoolsOnce you have selected the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you desire to attain, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Arcadia OK area and across the USA to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school comparisons. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first 2 variables you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Arcadia OK area technical programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you acquire a quality education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help measure the quality of a trade school near Arcadia OK is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It could also signify that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Arcadia OK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Arcadia OK area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Arcadia OK company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Oklahoma and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Arcadia OK, check that the programs you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.

    Arcadia, Oklahoma

Arcadia is a town in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma, United States, and a part of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. The population was 247 at the 2010 census, a decrease of 11.5 percent from 279 at the 2000 census.[4]

Arcadia was established soon after the Land Rush of 1889 and drew both white and African American cotton farmers, who named the land after the Greek town of Arcadia. A post office was established in 1890. The Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad constructed a line in 1902-3 from Bartlesville to Oklahoma City, passing immediately south of Arcadia.[5]

The town thrived as an agricultural community in the early 20th century. Located near the Deep Fork River, the soil was well suited to producing cotton. The local newspaper, the Arcadia Star, claimed Arcadia had a population of 800 in 1904. However, the U.S. census of 1900 counted only 706 in Deep Fork Township, which included Arcadia. The census at statehood in 1907 registered 994 persons in Arcadia.[5]
