Learning a Trade Online

Martins Ferry OH student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Martins Ferry OH students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to earn a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be appropriate for online training, such as learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on-campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to find out before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and provides in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new trade.

Things to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Martins Ferry OH trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many technical schools in the  Martins Ferry OH area and across the United States to pick from. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first 2 aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Martins Ferry OH area technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you get a quality education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Martins Ferry OH is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It could also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Martins Ferry OH area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Martins Ferry OH area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Martins Ferry OH company if they can provide some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Ohio and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Martins Ferry OH, confirm that the programs you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.

    Martins Ferry, Ohio

Martins Ferry is the oldest European settlement in the state of Ohio, having been settled at least as early as 1779, almost a decade before Marietta. The community was a westward extension of the city of Wheeling, Virginia (now West Virginia), but at that time, settlement on the west bank of the Ohio River was not permitted. Through the years, it has been known as Hoglinstown, Mercertown, Norristown(1785), Jefferson(1795), Martinsville(1835), and Martin's Ferry(1865) (the apostrophe is no longer used).

Squatters from across the Ohio were the earliest settlers. The settlement formed in the shadow of Virginia's Fort Henry on the Virginia side of the Ohio, built in 1774. The town was disbanded a couple of times before becoming established as Norristown in 1785.[citation needed] In 1795, the town of Jefferson was platted by Absalom Martin, one of the city's earliest settlers, who operated a ferry there. In 1801, he abandoned his plat when St. Clairsville was selected as the county seat of the newly organized county of Belmont, one of the founding territories of the Northwest Territory.

In 1835, Ebenezer Martin, the son of Absalom Martin, redesigned the town, which he called "Martinsville", with a grid system of streets, much of which survives to this day. Martinsville remained an unincorporated settlement for a relatively long time. It was eventually incorporated as a village in 1865 and renamed Martin's Ferry for Ebenezer's father's ferry. It was chartered as a city in 1885, and sometime later the apostrophe was dropped from the city's name.
