Learning a Vocation Online

Hockingport OH student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Hockingport OH students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online education, for example studying safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online instruction with on-campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to find out before choosing an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and provides in-depth hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to learn a new trade.

Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It could also mean that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Hockingport OH area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Hockingport OH area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Hockingport OH contractor if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to some of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Ohio and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Hockingport OH, verify that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.

The fort served as the base camp for the militia during Dunmore's War. It was the namesake fort of the Fort Gower Resolves issued by the soldiers stationed there in Nov. 1774. Among the officers present were many Virginians that would go on to become famous during the revolution. Present were William Campbell, George Rogers Clark, William Crawford, Simon Kenton, Andrew Lewis, Daniel Morgan, William Russell, Adam Stephen and many others. The fort was abandoned after Dunmore's War. Today the site of the fort is believed to be under water just beyond the point.
