Online Vocational Schools

Wahpeton ND student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Wahpeton ND students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be suitable for online learning, such as studying safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will combine online education with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and delivers comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to acquire a new profession.

A negatively ranked or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate may indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates secure apprenticeships or employment in the Wahpeton ND area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Wahpeton ND area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Wahpeton ND contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in North Dakota and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Wahpeton ND, verify that the programs you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
