Online Vocational Schools

Regan ND student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Regan ND students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online classes, for instance learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.  Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It may also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Regan ND area.

Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Regan ND area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Regan ND contractor if they can provide some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in North Dakota and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Regan ND, confirm that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment.
