new skills training sign Valdese NCDeciding to enter into a new occupation and enroll in a trade school near Valdese NC are serious decisions that will profoundly affect your long term career. However with numerous vocational schools to select from, exactly how do you approach finding the right one? Not only do you need to ascertain that you will receive the comprehensive training necessary to be successful in your new occupation, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Some students make the mistake of selecting a trade school just because the campus is nearest to their home or place of employment. Or they might be attracted to the school that has the most affordable tuition. Naturally the cost and location of the training are significant considerations when assessing trade school options, but they must not be the sole ones. Added considerations such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final selection. We will address some of those questions later in this post. But to start with, let’s talk about a few of the trade options that are available as well as the accessibility of online programs.

Online Vocational Schools

Valdese NC student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Valdese NC students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be appropriate for online classes, such as learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to ask before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Concerns to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Valdese NC trade schoolsOnce you have picked the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to earn, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Valdese NC area and across the USA to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school comparisons. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first 2 aspects you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Valdese NC area vocational programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Make sure that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get a quality education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, some states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Valdese NC is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It might also mean that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Valdese NC area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Valdese NC area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Valdese NC company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to some of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in North Carolina and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Valdese NC, check that the schools you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
