Online Trade Schools

Lake Waccamaw NC student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Lake Waccamaw NC students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online education, for example learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online education with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online studying and delivers in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to learn a new vocation.

They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. However, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate may signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It may also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Lake Waccamaw NC area.

Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Lake Waccamaw NC area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Lake Waccamaw NC company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with several of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in North Carolina and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Lake Waccamaw NC, verify that the schools you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment.
