new skills training sign Granite Falls NCDeciding to begin a new profession and enroll in a vocational school near Granite Falls NC are important decisions that will greatly impact your long term career. However with so many trade schools to choose from, exactly how do you approach locating the ideal one? Not only do you need to ascertain that you will receive the comprehensive training required to succeed in your new occupation, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. A number of prospective students make the mistake of enrolling in a vocational school just because the campus is closest to their residence or place of employment. Or they might gravitate to the school that has the lowest tuition. Of course the cost and location of the programs are significant factors when evaluating trade school options, but they can not be the sole ones. Additional variables such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking so you can get the information to make a final selection. We will cover several of those questions later in this article. But to start with, let’s talk about a few of the vocation options that are available including the accessibility of online schools.

Vocational Schools Online

Granite Falls NC student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Granite Falls NC students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be suitable for online training, for instance learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online instruction with on campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to determine before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides in-depth practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Concerns to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Granite Falls NC trade schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to attain, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Granite Falls NC area and throughout the Country to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school comparisons. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the initial two aspects you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Granite Falls NC area trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain a quality education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Granite Falls NC is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It might also mean that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or employment in the Granite Falls NC area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Granite Falls NC area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Granite Falls NC company if they can provide some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in North Carolina and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Granite Falls NC, verify that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.

    Granite Falls, North Carolina

Granite Falls is a town in Caldwell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 4,722 at the 2010 census.[4] It is part of the Hickory–Lenoir–Morganton Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The name Granite Falls comes from the waters that splash over the granite boulders spanning Gunpowder Creek. In 1791, pioneer Andrew Baird saw that he could operate an iron works beside the stream. In doing so, he became owner of all the land now occupied by the Town of Granite Falls. The community would live on from that point. Granite Falls was incorporated as a town in 1899. Before its incorporation Granite Falls went by many other names such as Baird's Forge, Catawba View, Lovelady, and Granite.[5]

Granite Falls is located near the southern border of Caldwell County at 35°48′1″N 81°25′59″W / 35.80028°N 81.43306°W / 35.80028; -81.43306 (35.800345, -81.432929).[6] It is bordered to the south by the town of Rhodhiss, to the southwest by Rhodhiss Lake on the Catawba River (Lake Hickory), and to the west by the town of Sawmills. The center of town is located on a ridge between the Catawba River to the west and Gunpowder Creek, a tributary of the Catawba, to the east.
