Added factors such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will address some of those questions later in this article. But to start with, let’s talk about a few of the vocation options that are offered as well as the availability of online programs.

Online Vocational Schools

Canton NC student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Canton NC students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a readily available and practical way to earn a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be appropriate for online learning, such as learning safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will combine online instruction with on-campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to ask before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with time constraints to learn a new trade.

Points to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Canton NC trade schoolsAfter you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you want to obtain, either on campus or online, you can begin to decrease your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many technical schools in the  Canton NC area and all over the USA to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of relevant qualifications when making school evaluations. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the initial two factors you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Canton NC area technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive a quality education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Canton NC is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might signify that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It may also mean that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Canton NC area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Canton NC area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Canton NC company if they can provide some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with several of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in North Carolina and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Canton NC, check that the schools you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
