new skills training sign Whitestone NYChoosing to work in a new profession and enroll in a vocational school near Whitestone NY are serious decisions that will profoundly impact your long term career. However with numerous vocational schools to pick from, just how do you undertake finding the ideal one? Not only do you need to make certain that you will receive the comprehensive training needed to be successful in your new field, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Many students make the mistake of enrolling in a vocational school just because the campus is nearest to their residence or place of employment. Or they might be attracted to the school that has the lowest tuition. Naturally the cost and location of the training are critical factors when analyzing vocational school options, but they should not be the sole ones. Additional factors such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will review several of those questions later in this article. But first, let’s look at a few of the vocation options that are available including the accessibility of online programs.

Online Trade Schools

Whitestone NY student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Whitestone NY students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online education, for instance studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on-campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to determine before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and provides comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Things to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Whitestone NY trade schoolsOnce you have picked the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you wish to earn, either on campus or online, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many trade schools in the  Whitestone NY area and throughout the United States to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school comparisons. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first 2 factors you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Whitestone NY area technical programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive a quality education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Whitestone NY is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It could also mean that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Whitestone NY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Whitestone NY area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Whitestone NY contractor if they can give you some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in New York and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Whitestone NY, verify that the schools you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.

    Whitestone, Queens

Whitestone is an upper-middle-class to upper-class residential neighborhood in the northernmost part of the New York City borough of Queens. The neighborhood proper is located between the East River to the north; College Point and Whitestone Expressway to the west; Flushing and 25th Avenue to the south; and Bayside and Francis Lewis Boulevard to the east.

Whitestone contains the subsection of Malba, which is bounded to the north by the East River, to the east by the Whitestone Expressway, to the south by 14th Avenue, and to the west by 138th Street. Malba was cited in a New York Times article as one of the few "elite enclaves" of Queens.[2]

Dutch settlers derived the name of the town from limestone that used to lie on the shore of the river according to a popular tradition. This tradition is supported by 17th century wills and deeds, which may be found in The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, that refer to "the white stone" as a local landmark and survey reference point. Whitestone got its name because the settlers discovered that Whitestone was built on white limestone. The neighborhood is patrolled by the NYPD's 109th Precinct, and is part of Queens Community Board 7. It is traditionally bounded by the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge (opened 1939) on the west and the Throgs Neck Bridge (opened 1961) on the east.[3] The zip code of Whitestone is 11357.
