Vocational Schools Online

Star Lake NY student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Star Lake NY students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be appropriate for online learning, such as studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new trade.

On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It might also mean that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist grads acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Star Lake NY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Star Lake NY area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Star Lake NY contractor if they can give you some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with some of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in New York and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Star Lake NY, verify that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
