Trade Schools Online

Otego NY student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Otego NY students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online classes, for example studying safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on-campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to determine before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Things to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Otego NY trade schoolsAs soon as you have picked the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you want to obtain, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many technical schools in the  Otego NY area and throughout the Country to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of key qualifications when making school comparisons. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the initial two aspects you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Otego NY area technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive an excellent education, it can assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states require that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Otego NY is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also suggest that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Otego NY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many training programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Otego NY area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Otego NY contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to several of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in New York and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Otego NY, confirm that the programs you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.
