Learning a Trade Online

Ocate NM student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Ocate NM students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online training, for example studying safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will combine online instruction with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to ask before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online studying and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with time constraints to learn a new vocation.

Concerns to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Ocate NM trade schoolsAfter you have picked the trade and type of degree or certificate that you desire to acquire, either on campus or online, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Ocate NM area and across the USA to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of key qualifiers when making school evaluations. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first two variables you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Ocate NM area technical schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Make sure that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire a quality education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, many states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Ocate NM is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate could signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It could also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Ocate NM area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Ocate NM area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Ocate NM company if they can provide some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in New Mexico and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Ocate NM, confirm that the schools you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.

    Ocate Peak

Ocate Peak is located just southeast of the community of Ocate, and State Road 120 passes just north of it. Originally, due to the heightened chance of meeting marauding Indians on the plains, the Santa Fe Trail kept as close to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains as possible, passing through Rayado to the community of Ocate and passing west of Ocate Peak. After Fort Union was established in 1851, the trail took the easier route east of Ocate Peak, but still west of the Turkey Mountains.
