Not only do you need to confirm that you will get the comprehensive training necessary to be successful in your new profession, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Or they might gravitate to the school that charges the lowest tuition. Of course the location and cost of the programs are significant factors when evaluating trade school options, but they can not be the only ones. Additional factors such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical as well. We will address some of those questions shortly in this article. But first, let’s talk about a few of the trade options that are offered including the availability of online programs.

Trade Schools Online

Lakewood NM student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Lakewood NM students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online education, for instance studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will blend online education with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and provides comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to acquire a new trade.

Concerns to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Lakewood NM trade schoolsAfter you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you wish to earn, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Lakewood NM area and throughout the Country to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of important qualifications when making school assessments. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first two variables you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Lakewood NM area trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you get an excellent education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states require that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Lakewood NM is how long it has been in business. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate may signify that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It may also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Lakewood NM area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Lakewood NM area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Lakewood NM contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with some of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in New Mexico and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Lakewood NM, verify that the schools you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
