Online Vocational Schools

Holloman Air Force Base NM student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Holloman Air Force Base NM students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online education, for instance studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to determine before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

Questions to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Holloman Air Force Base NM trade schoolsAs soon as you have picked the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you desire to obtain, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Holloman Air Force Base NM area and across the Country to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school comparisons. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial 2 aspects you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Holloman Air Force Base NM area technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire a superior education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Holloman Air Force Base NM is how long it has been in business. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It could also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Holloman Air Force Base NM area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Holloman Air Force Base NM area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Holloman Air Force Base NM company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in New Mexico and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Holloman Air Force Base NM, check that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
