Trade Schools Online

Cannon Afb NM student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Cannon Afb NM students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online classes, for instance learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will combine online education with on-campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to determine before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Points to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Cannon Afb NM trade schoolsAfter you have chosen the trade and type of certificate or degree that you wish to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many trade schools in the  Cannon Afb NM area and throughout the United States to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first two factors you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Cannon Afb NM area trade programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you get a superior education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Cannon Afb NM is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It may also signify that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Cannon Afb NM area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous training programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Cannon Afb NM area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Cannon Afb NM contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with several of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in New Mexico and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Cannon Afb NM, verify that the schools you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
