Not only do you need to make sure that you will receive the complete training necessary to be successful in your new field, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Many potential students make the mistake of choosing a trade school just because the campus is nearest to their home or place of employment. Or they might be attracted to the one that charges the most affordable tuition. Naturally the cost and location of the programs are important factors when evaluating vocational school options, but they should not be the sole ones. Additional considerations including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will cover a few of those questions shortly in this post. But to start with, let’s look at a few of the trade options that are available as well as the accessibility of online schools.

Trade Schools Online

Fort Lee NJ student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Fort Lee NJ students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online learning, such as learning driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online education with on campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and provides in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to learn a new trade.

Concerns to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Fort Lee NJ trade schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the trade and type of certificate or degree that you desire to acquire, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Fort Lee NJ area and across the Country to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of important qualifications when making school assessments. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first two variables you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Fort Lee NJ area technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire a quality education, it may assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Fort Lee NJ is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate may indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Fort Lee NJ area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many training programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Fort Lee NJ area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Fort Lee NJ contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to some of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in New Jersey and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Fort Lee NJ, check that the schools you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
