Online Trade Schools

Venango NE student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Venango NE students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online learning, such as studying safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will combine online education with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to ask before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides in-depth practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Concerns to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Venango NE trade schoolsOnce you have selected the trade and type of certificate or degree that you want to earn, either on campus or online, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. Accreditation.  Many Venango NE area trade schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Confirm that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire a quality education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Venango NE area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Venango NE area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Venango NE contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Nebraska and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Venango NE, check that the schools you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
