Online Vocational Schools

Lexington NE student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Lexington NE students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online classes, for example learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will combine online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to determine before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Confirm that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. A low completion rate may signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It may also signify that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Lexington NE area.

Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Lexington NE area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Lexington NE contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to a few of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Nebraska and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Lexington NE, verify that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment.
