Learning a Vocation Online

Strongs MI student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Strongs MI students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online education, for example learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and provides comprehensive practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to learn a new vocation.

Concerns to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Strongs MI trade schoolsAfter you have selected the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to earn, either on campus or online, you can begin to decrease your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many technical schools in the  Strongs MI area and throughout the United States to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school assessments. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial two factors you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Strongs MI area technical programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Make sure that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire an excellent education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Also, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Strongs MI is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate may suggest that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It may also signify that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Strongs MI area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Strongs MI area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Strongs MI company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Michigan and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Strongs MI, check that the programs you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
