new skills training sign Interlochen MIChoosing to enter into a new profession and enroll in a vocational school near Interlochen MI are important decisions that will profoundly affect your future career. But with so many trade schools to pick from, exactly how do you approach finding the right one? Not only do you have to make certain that you will receive the comprehensive training needed to be successful in your new profession, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Some students make the mistake of selecting a trade school simply because the campus is nearest to their residence or place of employment. Or they may be attracted to the one that has the most affordable tuition. Naturally the location and cost of the training are significant factors when evaluating trade school options, but they should not be the only ones. Additional considerations including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important also. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions you should be asking so you can get the information to make a final selection. We will cover several of those questions shortly in this article. But first, let’s look at a few of the trade options that are offered including the availability of online programs.

Trade Schools Online

Interlochen MI student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Interlochen MI students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online training, for example learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to find out before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and delivers in-depth practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

Points to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Interlochen MI trade schoolsOnce you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you want to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Interlochen MI area and all over the Country to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school assessments. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first 2 variables you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Interlochen MI area vocational programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you receive a superior education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, some states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Interlochen MI is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It could also indicate that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Interlochen MI area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Interlochen MI area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Interlochen MI contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Michigan and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Interlochen MI, check that the programs you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

    Interlochen, Michigan

Interlochen is an unincorporated community in Northwest Lower Michigan. It is in Green Lake Township, within Grand Traverse County. The community is noted for the internationally renowned Interlochen Center for the Arts. As of the 2010 census, the Interlochen census-designated place (CDP) had a population of 583.[2]

Before the arrival of European settlers, members of the Odawa people lived between the lakes they called Wahbekaness and Wahbekanetta (now named Duck Lake and Green Lake, respectively). Beginning in the late 19th century, European settlers began logging and fishing industries in the area. As the lumber industry grew, the area became more deforested, until in 1917 the state of Michigan purchased the remaining virgin pines and created Interlochen State Park, the first state park in Michigan.[3] In 1928, the National High School Orchestra Camp was founded at Interlochen and evolved to become Interlochen Center for the Arts, which includes a summer camp as well as a fine arts boarding high school and public radio station.

As the name suggests, Interlochen is situated between the two lakes of the original Odawa settlement. It is 14 miles (23 km) southwest of Traverse City at 44°38′43″N 85°46′02″W / 44.64528°N 85.76722°W / 44.64528; -85.76722, and sits at an elevation of 841 feet (256 m) above sea level. The ZIP Code is 49643.
