Vocational Schools Online

Cement City MI student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Cement City MI students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online learning, such as learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will combine online education with on-campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to ask before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to learn a new profession.

Points to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Cement City MI trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you want to earn, either on campus or online, you can begin to decrease your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Cement City MI area and across the United States to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of key qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial 2 aspects you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Cement City MI area technical programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make certain that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you acquire an excellent education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Cement City MI is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might signify that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It could also mean that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Cement City MI area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Cement City MI area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Cement City MI company if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with a few of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Michigan and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Cement City MI, verify that the programs you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
