Learning a Trade Online

Bay Port MI student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Bay Port MI students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online training, such as learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to ask before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and provides in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new profession.

Concerns to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Bay Port MI trade schoolsOnce you have picked the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to attain, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Bay Port MI area and across the United States to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school comparisons. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first two aspects you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Bay Port MI area technical schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire an excellent education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states require that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help assess the quality of a trade school near Bay Port MI is how long it has been in business. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It might also mean that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Bay Port MI area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous trade programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Bay Port MI area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Bay Port MI contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Michigan and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Bay Port MI, verify that the programs you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
