Learning a Trade Online

Bancroft MI student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Bancroft MI students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online education, for example studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will combine online education with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new trade.

Questions to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Bancroft MI trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you desire to attain, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many trade schools in the  Bancroft MI area and all over the USA to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school evaluations. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the initial 2 factors you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Bancroft MI area vocational schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get a quality education, it may help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Bancroft MI is how long it has been in business. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It could also suggest that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Bancroft MI area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Bancroft MI area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Bancroft MI contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to some of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Michigan and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Bancroft MI, check that the schools you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
