Online Trade Schools

Shelburne Falls MA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Shelburne Falls MA students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online learning, for instance studying safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will combine online education with on-campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to determine before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and provides in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new trade.

Questions to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Shelburne Falls MA trade schoolsWhen you have picked the trade and type of certificate or degree that you desire to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Shelburne Falls MA area and across the Country to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of key qualifications when making school comparisons. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Shelburne Falls MA area technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you acquire a quality education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help determine the quality of a trade school near Shelburne Falls MA is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It could also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or employment in the Shelburne Falls MA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Shelburne Falls MA area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Shelburne Falls MA contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with several of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Massachusetts and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Shelburne Falls MA, check that the schools you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
