Learning a Trade Online

Lutherville Timonium MD student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Lutherville Timonium MD students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online classes, for example studying driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

Questions to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Lutherville Timonium MD trade schoolsOnce you have picked the trade and type of degree or certificate that you want to acquire, either online or on campus, you can begin to decrease your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Lutherville Timonium MD area and throughout the United States to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of relevant qualifications when making school evaluations. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the initial 2 variables you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Lutherville Timonium MD area technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire an excellent education, it can help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Also, many states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help measure the quality of a trade school near Lutherville Timonium MD is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It may also mean that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Lutherville Timonium MD area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Lutherville Timonium MD area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Lutherville Timonium MD contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Maryland and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Lutherville Timonium MD, verify that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
