Online Vocational Schools

Clarksburg MD student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Clarksburg MD students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online education, such as learning driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will incorporate online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the syllabus. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and provides in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Points to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Clarksburg MD trade schoolsOnce you have picked the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, either on campus or online, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Clarksburg MD area and throughout the Country to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school assessments. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first two factors you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Clarksburg MD area vocational programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire an excellent education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, many states require that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Clarksburg MD is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate might signify that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It may also signify that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Clarksburg MD area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many trade programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Clarksburg MD area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Clarksburg MD contractor if they can provide some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Maryland and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Clarksburg MD, check that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
