Online Vocational Schools

West Enfield ME student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with West Enfield ME students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online education, for instance learning safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will blend online education with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to ask before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and provides comprehensive practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Things to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask West Enfield ME trade schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you desire to earn, either online or on campus, you can begin to decrease your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  West Enfield ME area and throughout the Country to select from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of key qualifiers when making school assessments. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of West Enfield ME area trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive an excellent education, it may help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help measure the quality of a trade school near West Enfield ME is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It might also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the West Enfield ME area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with West Enfield ME area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local West Enfield ME contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Maine and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near West Enfield ME, confirm that the schools you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
